York GP Says A&E Not the Only Service Open at Christmas
6:01am 30th December 2012
A&E is not the only option available in North Yorkshire if you get ill this Christmas.
That's according to Dr David Heywood, who is a GP in York.
Dr Heywood explains that there are five options available. He says that self care is an important one. Rest and over the counter remedies are the most effective treatment for coughs and colds, and tummy bugs, he says.
Pharmacists are also a good source of medical advice and treatment options on minor conditions, says Dr Haywood, adding that some will be open throughout the festive period.
NHS Direct is a nurse led service available all year round and over Christmas, where patients can ring up at any time of day or night to get advice or a referral. You can contact NHS direct on 0845 4647.
Out of hour’s doctors services are also available at this time of year, says Dr Heywood, who stresses GP surgeries are only closed for 3 days over the festive period. He adds that you should contact your own doctor if your surgery is open. Most surgeries have an extended hours services or a GP on call outside normal office hours, says Dr Heywood. You can contact the out of hours service on 0845 056 8060.
Dr Heywood also says that the walk in centre based at the A&E is also a service available over the Festive period for minor injuries.
Dr Heywood adds that in an emergency you should always dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.
