Drivers in Selby Warned After Attempted Car Theft
2:45pm 13th December 2012
Police investigating a suspected attempt to steal a car in the Selby area are appealing for witnesses and information.
Officers are also urging motorists to be on their guard while driving in the area at night.
At around 9.45pm on Wednesday 12 December 2012, a 56-year-old local woman, was driving her car along the B1222 towards Stillingfleet, around 250m from the A19, when she noticed something at the side of the road.
It appeared to be a bicycle lying half on the grass verge and half on the carriageway with a man laying down beside it.
As the woman slowed down to take a closer look another man approached her vehicle and tried to open the driver’s door before trying the boot and the passenger side door in an apparent attempt to get in. The woman said he was shouting and behaving in an aggressive manner.
The man who had been lying in the road then got to his feet and also made an attempt to get into the car, banging the driver’s door with his hand.
Eventually, the woman said she managed to drive off at speed with one of the men seemingly trying to cling to her car.
The two men are described as white, aged between 17 and 20-years-old, one with a medium build, the other was slim. They both wore hooded tops and other dark clothing, with hats and scarves covering their faces.
Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any other information that can help the investigation to contact them with information.
Inspector Richard Abbott, of Selby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Clearly this was a frightening incident for the woman involved who thought she was doing the right thing by stopping to help someone who was potentially injured.
“It is imperative that anyone who witnessed this incident or can help the police to identify the men responsible, comes forward with information as soon as possible.
“This is a very unusual incident for the area and I am appealing to any motorists who saw any suspicious behaviour along that stretch of road either before or after the incident to get in touch.”
Inspector Abbott also reassured residents that extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspects, but people must be vigilant at this time.
He added: “At this stage we don’t know the motives behind this incident and I am urging motorists to be on their guard.
“Make sure all your doors are locked while you are driving and if you do see something unusual at the side of the road, contact the emergency services rather than trying to deal with it yourself.”
