Sherburn in Elmet Landlord Prosecuted
1:26pm 21st November 2012
Selby District Council has taken legal action against a Sherburn in Elmet landlord who failed to carry out improvement works.
They say that landlord David Alexander was given a 12 month conditional discharge by Selby Magistrates Court yesterday and ordered to pay costs of £520.
The Council say Alexander's tenant contacted them to raise concerns about a range of issues including damp, ventilation, gas safety inspections and the lack of smoke detectors and the landlord was ordered to carry out remedial works.
Selby District Council say they have a duty to uphold the rights of both tenants and landlords by ensuring that both adhere to housing regulations.
A spokesman for the authority said, "The Council ultimately has a responsibility to work with private landlords and tenants in this area to ensure that housing and landlord services meet particular standards. In this case, we took action because the situation remained dangerous despite warnings being issued to the landlord".
