Householders in North Yorkshire are Urged to 'Lock Up and Light Up'.
11:38am 30th October 2012
Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership are urging householders to be aware of the dangers of dark nights and ‘light up and lock up’ their homes.
They say that as the winter draws nearer, with clocks going back this weekend, homes left in darkness can be targets for thieves especially between 4.00pm and 9pm.
Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership has issued a six point guide to securing property:
- a well lit home gives the impression that someone is in
- use timer switchers to turn lights on while you are out
- don’t leave curtains closed during the day, only in the evening and overnight
- lock all windows and doors
- keep valuable items out of view
- keep gates well secured
“We are all leading busier lives and between 4 and 9pm we are all less alert - we are coming home from work, collecting children from school, carrying in bags of shopping.” Said Councillor Carl Les, Chairman of Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership. “We don’t pay enough attention to what is going on around us.
“But with a little thought we can prevent a large number of these incidents and the distress that it causes to the victims. Do not make it easy for the burglar - a few seconds of action and maybe a small amount of expense can thwart these criminals.”
