12:01am 15th September 2012
A new sports field will keep kids out of trouble in Riccall.
The 115 thousand pound investment will enable children in the village to play things like cricket and football.
Riccall Parish Council Statement:
Grassroots sport in Riccall and Selby District will receive a significant boost this Saturday, following the opening of Riccall Jubilee Sportsfield, funded by Drax Power, the Football Foundation, Riccall Parish Council, Riccall Utd FC, the Eastern Area CEF group, a Section 106 housing development agreement and local fundraising (with great thanks to local singer Billy Bills).
The new facility will allow junior teams from Riccall Utd FC to develop within the community and is a public area aimed at encouraging sports for all. Plans are that in time, alongside being used for local junior football teams, the new Sportsfield will be used for cricket, athletics and other sports.
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said:
'The opening of this new facility will provide the local community with more opportunities to take part in regular sport.
'Not only will the community users benefit from a state of the art quality pitch on which to play football and other sports, but they will also benefit from the health and social benefits that accompany this.
'Riccall Parish Council has invested a significant amount of time and effort to bring this project to fruition and deserve great credit for producing this tremendous facility.'
Lindsey Ryan, Clerk to Riccall Parish Council, said:
'The new Jubilee Sportsfield is the result of years of hard work, planning and fund-raising and can now provide a great legacy for future generations of young people and families within Riccall and the surrounding areas.
'Riccall Parish Council continues to support the health, social and sporting activities of the community for all ages and believes that, particularly in this Olympic year, the development of grassroots sport is essential within the District and within the Country.'
