Reports of a sudden nursery closure in York leaves parents angry

5:49am 4th September 2012
(Updated 1:46pm 4th September 2012)

Parents in York have been left angry and confused.

It's after Smartypants nursery on Castlegate apparantly closed without any warning.

Parents claim they paid next month's fees, just a few days before they received a letter telling them to find alternative childcare.

Some say they've lost nearly a thousand pounds, and now they have to payout for another nursery.

The Staff have been in contact with Minster FM, they claim they weren't told they were losing their jobs until Friday evening, and also report that they have not been paid, as expected on Friday.

The City of York Council say the closure is nothing to do with ofsted or any concerns.

We've had no comment from the owner of Smartypants.

City of York Council Statement:

The council  learnt of the plan to close the Smarty Pants Nursery on Friday afternoon and was informed that the nursery had sent a letter to parents detailing their closure.

Families can call the family information service to gain advice about alternative childcare, on 01904 554444, email or by clicking here

As a private nursery parents would have to try and claim fees back from the business itself.

Louisa spoke to Melissa, her daughter used the nursery:
