Fatal collision on the A19

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after a cyclist died as the result of a road traffic collision near Thirsk.

It occurred at approximately 5pm on Saturday 18th August 2012, on the A19 near Sowerby. The collision involved a black Alfa Romeo 156 and a black racing pedal cycle which were both travelling on the northbound carriageway.

The man riding the racing cycle was taking part in an organized time trial event.

As a result of the incident the 75 year old man from Leeds riding the pedal cycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 29 year old man from Appleton Wiske, near Northallerton who was driving the car was not injured as a result of the collision.

We are not yet in a position to name the man who died.

The road was closed until 10pm following the collision.

Traffic Sergeant John Lumbard, of North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group, said:

“If you witnessed the collision or were travelling on the northbound section of the A19 around the time of the collision I ask that you contact the police as soon as possible.

“I am particularly keen to speak with anyone who can help to establish the manner of driving of any vehicles using the stretch of dual carriageway.

“I would also like to speak to anyone who was aware that the a time trial event was taking place at the time.”
