York promotes itself in London ahead of the Olympics

The Olympic Torch may have left York but the City will continue to be in the spotlight during the Olympic Games thanks to Visit York, the City’s tourism organisation. 

Visit York is delighted to announce that over six million day and staying visitors to London will be greeted by an invitation to visit York throughout the Olympics.  A huge stunning image of York, showcasing the riverside, York Minster and surrounding countryside will ensure that visitors to the Olympic Games from over two hundred countries are in no doubt that York is the best city to visit this year outside of London.

Working in partnership with LOCOG and Visit England, Visit York has successfully secured gigantic eight metre by four metre advertising sheets at twenty stations across the London Underground, including Charing Cross, Earl’s Court, Knightsbridge, Embankment and Westminster and at the Olympic Park in Stratford.  The large format posters will be a major driver of visits to York during and after the Olympics.

Over six million visitors are expected to arrive into London during the Olympic Games and an additional 20 million tube trips are expected to be made by spectators during the Games on top of the usual 3.5 million journeys made per day.  The biggest visitor groups are expected to be from the United States, Europe, Australia and the Far East.

Visit York’s Olympic advertising campaign is part of  the current marketing drive – ‘2012 – Time to Visit York’, which has already seen powerful advertising and promotions at mainline railway stations including Edinburgh, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Peterborough, Newark and Kings Cross, sponsored by East Coast Trains, York Minster, York Dungeon and York Designer Outlet.  A second wave of advertising will begin again later in the year.

York’s tourism agency is pulling out all of the stops to ensure York capitalises on the Olympics.  In addition to securing this high profile London Underground advertising, Visit York has hosted a film crew from NBC, the official London 2012 broadcast rights holder in the United States and this month will be hosting NHK, Japan’s official Olympics broadcaster, as well as hosting up to twenty journalists on a familiarisation visit from London in association with Visit England.
