Council Leader visits Job Centre Plus
2:47pm 30th May 2012
Labour leader of City of York Council, Cllr Alexander visited York’s Job Centre Plus today, where he will learned more about the help offered to the unemployed and areas in which the council can help.
The aim of the visit was to help Cllr Alexander understand how employment vacancies within the city are being matched to unemployed people.
Cllr James Alexander Labour Leader of City of York council, said:
“I was interested to find out in more detail how the Job Centre Plus matches vacant jobs to unemployed people and also how the use of this service has changed since the economic downturn with unemployment rising nationally.
"Even though York does has the second lowest number of people claiming job seeker’s allowance claimants in the Yorkshire and Humber region, I want to find out how this can be reduced even more.
Since my visit I have already discussed with the Chief Executive about the council organising a job fair so that we can help match recruiting businesses with our residents who are unemployed”.
The visit follows Cllr Alexander’s visit to Prospect Training in Ryedale house.
