The actor who played one of Coronation Street’s most infamous villains will play the Devil in York Mystery Plays 2012.
Graeme Hawley, 37, was nominated for Villain of the Year in the 2009 and 2011 British Soap Awards for his role as John Stape.
Graeme, who has also appeared in Shameless, A Touch of Frost and Emmerdale, said he was thrilled to be taking on the role in the biggest outdoor theatre production in the UK this year. Graeme will star opposite Ferdinand Kinglsey, 24, who was announced last week as playing both God and Jesus in the plays.
Both will start rehearsing with the rest of the 500 strong cast next month.
“I am thrilled to be taking part in York Mystery Plays this summer in what I’m certain will be a truly spectacular production. I am used to playing bad guys and they don't get much bigger than the devil!
“The plays are a really important part of York's heritage and it is an honour for me to be chosen to take part in something which has such an important place within the city and beyond. It has been an ambition of mine to work with York Theatre Royal, for many years, so I am over the moon to finally get that opportunity.
“I can't imagine a better place to spend the summer working on this amazing production! I am looking forward to meeting and rehearsing with the rest of the 500 strong cast and then performing in such an outdoor setting. I am sure it will be a fantastic experience for me and hopefully for the thousands of people who come to watch."
