North Yorkshire Police Authority is pleased to announce that Iain Spittal has been appointed as an Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) for North Yorkshire Police, with responsibility for delivering safer neighbourhoods throughout the policing area. This post will be responsible for the command of all police operations in the Force area.
Iain has been serving as Temporary ACC since August 2011 having joined North Yorkshire Police in 1986. Having a varied career within the police service, Iain was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent in 2005 taking over as the Area Commander for both the City of York and Selby District in May 2005.
In December 2008 Iain transferred to work as Chief of Staff supporting the Chief Constable and the strategic leadership team. Iain was successful in passing the Police National Assessment Centre in September 2009, progressing on to the national Strategic Command Course in January 2010.
Jane Kenyon, Chairman of the Police Authority said:
"We are absolutely delighted to appoint Iain into the role of Assistant Chief Constable, with responsibilities for safer neighbourhoods policing, on a permanent basis.
"Having undertaken the role on a temporary basis since last August, Iain has proven himself to be an exceptionally able senior officer who is highly regarded and respected by all - both within and external to North Yorkshire Police. This appointment will offer the force a great opportunity for successful continuity throughout this challenging year."
Iain Spittal commented:
"I am excited and incredibly honoured to be offered this opportunity to continue working with and serving the communities of North Yorkshire and the City of York as an Assistant Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police.
"Having served my probationary period back in 1986 in Ryedale, I know that delivering safer neighbourhoods policing is seen as an essential service by the communities we serve. It is at the heart of everything that North Yorkshire Police does and is the key to keeping the area one of the safest in the country. It's my job to make sure we achieve the best results for our communities - within the significant budget constraints we are facing. I remain immensely proud of our Officers, Police Community Support Officers and Staff, and thank them, the communities and the Police Authority for their continued support throughout my service. I am really looking forward to my role as ACC in North Yorkshire Police."
