Disappointment for North Yorkshire cancer sufferer
3:42pm 12th April 2012
Brave Knaresborough toddler Sadie Rose Clifford and her family faced heart-breaking news at the hospital in the US where she had gone for treatment for her neuroblastoma.
When she arrived at the hospital in New York, her family discovered that she had relapsed and was unable to join the trial. After treatment to stabilise the cancer, a new appeal is now being launched to raise the funds desperately needed for Sadie Rose to join a new trial.
Sadie, aged 2, from Hawthorn Avenue in Knaresborough, was diagnosed with the aggressive childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma, in October 2010. After lengthy treatment in the UK, supporters raised money to send Sadie to a hospital in America for specialist treatment which is unavailable in the UK.
Sadly, when Sadie reached America, her family discovered that she had relapsed in the short time between Christmas and arriving in New York and was not well enough to start the trial treatment. She received urgent treatment in the US to stabilise the cancer and returned home; Sadie will shortly begin further chemotherapy in the UK.
Sadie’s family are now hoping to raise further funds in the hope that Sadie will get well enough to be able to join a new clinical trial abroad.

Sadie’s mum Katie explained:
‘We were devastated to discover that Sadie had relapsed. Thanks to the emergency treatment she received in New York, her condition has now stabilised, but we were advised to return to the UK, continue with chemotherapy to hopefully improve Sadie’s health and then try to find another trial later. The trip and treatment made a big hole in the funds raised to date, which is why we’re asking all those who supported Sadie so amazingly before to carry on raising funds for our darling daughter.’
‘The last three months have been incredibly difficult, but Sadie has managed to remain cheerful; she is such a brave and happy little girl. We know that with the continued help of our magnificent supporters Sadie will keep on fighting. Thank you all for your fantastic support so far, but please – keep on supporting Sadie.’
Supporters from Knaresborough and across the UK have already raised £370,000 to help fund Sadie’s treatment. About half of this has already been spent funding the trip to New York and the emergency treatment Sadie received there. The new appeal will raise funds for a second trial abroad that will give Sadie a chance to beat the disease.
The treatment that Sadie needs is not available in the UK and treatment in the US is extremely expensive – a hospital bed alone costs around $10,000 per night, before taking into account the costs of the treatment itself and the doctors and care staff.
Sadie’s family are raising money through Neuroblastoma Alliance UK, a charity which helps families across the UK raise funds and arrange treatment for children with Neuroblastoma. The charity is currently helping 17 families across the UK and also funds research into the disease and potential treatments.
