Council launches new 'smarter York' app
12:00am 30th March 2012
York residents and visitors will be able to report a host of street problems at the click of a button thanks to the creation of a free new app available on the Smarter York website - www.smarteryork.com - and on all app stores
The Smarter York app enables anyone with a smart phone to take a picture of an issue, such as graffiti, litter or flytipping and send the location and photo through to the council with a single click. The information can then be forwarded on to a street cleaner, or council officer in the area, for rapid response.
Residents will also be able to check online to see whether an issue in their area has already been reported, and to check on the status of the query along with a photo once the problem has been sorted, The customer will receive an email containing a direct link to the website at key stages in the process so they know their query is progressing.
The app was developed following a visit by the council's Leader, Councillor James Alexander, to Lewisham Borough Council last year, to see a similar app in operation there.
Councillor Alexander explained:
"This is all about improving services whilst reducing costs. When Lewisham Council introduced the app it helped reduce graffiti in the area by 73 per cent and flytipping by 53 per cent - and we expect to see the same results in York.
"Residents can already use the online forms on the council's website to report flytipping, graffiti, etc, but apps are an even easier way for people to use their phone or iPad to report a problem.
"We want to make it as easy as possible for residents and visitors to contact us with issues, and hope that the app will enable us to provide a more efficient, effective service for our customers."
