Minister urged to reopen a York post office

12:00am 17th March 2012

The fight to reopen a York post office has got the backing of a local MP.

Hugh Bayley's calling for the site on Tang Hall Lane to resume service.

He thinks it's a disgrace it's still shut 13 months after its temporary closure.

Mr Bayley's wrote to Norman Lamb MP, the minister responsible for post offices.

Official statement from York Central MP Hugh Bayley's constituency office:

York Central MP Hugh Bayley has written to Norman Lamb MP, the Lib Dem Minister responsible for post offices to urge him to reopen Tang Hall Lane Post office, which has remained closed for over a year.

Tang Hall Post Office closed in February 2011, following the resignation of the sub postmaster. Post Office Ltd assured Mr Bayley the closure was a temporary one but a year on residents still have to manage without their local post office.

In his letter Mr Bayley reminded the Minister of the election pledge made by the Lib Dems in 2010 that they would "keep post offices open"

Hugh Bayley MP says:

"The Lib Dems say they are opposed to closures and will fight to keep local post offices open but it isn't happening. There have been two Ministers responsible for Post offices since the general election and they were both Lib Dems."

"The temporary closure of Tang Hall Lane Post Office is one among many across the country. The Minister was asked in Westminster last month how many post offices were temporarily closed. He was unable to answer and has passed the question Post Office Ltd.

"The government should come clean about this, are they supporting local post offices or closing them through stealth?"
