Man runs over boy in tent near Selby

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after a 16-year-old boy was run over inside a tent.

Police were called at 3.55am in the early hours of Sunday 11 March to a field in Barlby near Selby.

A group of teenagers were camping in the field between York Road and the River Ouse.

A man reportedly approached the group and chatted with them and the conversation escalated into a disagreement. The man then threatened to run over their tent with his vehicle. 

The man left the scene and returned a short time later in a white van and carried out his threat to run over the tent.

Most of the group escaped and hid nearby, however, one youth, a 16-year-old local boy remained inside the tent and sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident.

He was taken to York District Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

His injuries include a broken arm and severe bruising to his body.

The man who was arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Heather Pearson, said:

“This is a disturbing incident which has resulted in a teenager sustaining serious injuries. It is vital that we obtain as much information as possible of the events leading up to the incident.

“I am therefore appealing to anyone, in particular nearby residents, to contact the police with any information they have relating to the incident.

“If anyone saw a white van in the area late on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday morning, please contact us as a matter of urgency.”
