The Prime Minister has praised Peter Lawrence, the father of missing York chef, for his work in trying to improve the rights of the families of those missing to resolve their relative’s affairs in their absence.

At Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons today (7th March 2012), Nigel Adams MP for Selby & Ainsty, (and Co-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Missing & Runaway Children & Adults)  asked David Cameron:

“Can the Prime Minister join me, along with the thousands of families with missing loved ones, including the family of missing York woman Claudia Lawrence, in supporting the sensible recommendations of the Justice Select Committee’s report into Missing People’s rights and the Presumption of Death?”

In his response, Mr Cameron said,

“I think this is an important issue he raises and I pay tribute to Peter Lawrence and his support for this campaign [with the charity] Missing People

The Justice Select Committee has made an important report on this issue. We acknowledge the present law is complicated. I recognise all the emotional and practical difficulties faced by those whose loved ones are missing. We are going to consider these recommendations very carefully and perhaps I can write to the honourable Member when we come up with answer.”

Welcoming the Prime Minister’s response, Martin Dales, Peter Lawrence’s friend and spokesman, said,

“It is heartening to hear the Prime Minister’s recognition of all the tireless work, effort and self-sacrifice Peter has put into this Missing Rights campaign whilst at the same time trying to find out what has happened to Claudia after nearly three years.

"He is very grateful to Nigel Adams MP for putting the question to the Prime Minister today and hopes that the Government will look favourably, sooner rather than later, on helping make life easier for those left behind in dealing with their loved one’s affairs.”
