Two men aged 18 and 19, and a youth aged 16, all from York, were arrested last night (Thursday 5th January 2012) following reports of suspicious activity at a property on Boroughbridge Road in York.
A call was received at 8.22pm after a member of the public noticed men acting suspiciously at the property.
Police arrived at the scene and by 8.30pm, one man had been arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Another suspect ran from the property into nearby gardens. Air support was called in from West Yorkshire Police's helicopter unit and the suspect was located at 8.38pm inside a wheelie bin.
A third suspect was arrested at around 9.15 at a property in York.
The three were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently in custody for questioning.
Members of the public assisted police officers in the search for the suspects and officers have praised them for their assistance.
Chief Inspector Dave Hannan of York Safer neighbourhood Team, said:
"The swift arrest of these suspects was a combination of excellent police work and assistance from members of the public.
"Two suspects were arrested in less than 20 minutes of the original call and third within the next half an hour.
"There is a clear message to criminals here that York and North Yorkshire is a no-go area for them. Both the police and members of the public will not tolerate their behaviour and this is the result of us working together.
"Once again I would like to thank the people of York for their support."
West Yorkshire Police (WYP) Spokesperson said:
"The West Yorkshire Police helicopter assisted North Yorkshire Police in an area search of Boroughbridge Road in York, following a domestic burglary (05/01).
"The helicopter attended the scene at 8:50pm and located a man in a garden. Using the thermal camera the crew saw a wheelie bin emitting heat and ground units were directed in. A man was located hiding in the bin. The helicopter left the scene at 9:10pm."
