A North Yorkshire canoeist has died

A North Yorkshire canoeist, who got in to difficulties in a Cumbrian river on New Year's Day, has died from her injures.

41 year old Catherine Stainsby, who lived near Malton, was rescued from Hobdale Beck and airlifted to hospital.

She died in intensive-care yesterday.

Statement from Cumbria Police

Cumbria Police are able to confirm Catherine Stainsby, aged 41, from Middle Street, Swinton, Malton in North Yorkshire, sadly died yesterday (3rd January 2012) at Preston Royal Infirmary.
 
Mrs Stainsby was part of a group who were canoeing at Hobdale Beck, Cautley, Sedbergh on 1st January 2012.

At 2:24 pm paramedics, fire and police were called when they got into difficulties. Mrs Stainsby was rescued and taken to Preston Royal Infirmary by air ambulance, were she later sadly died..
 
All of the other canoeists were safe and well.
