Selby District Council introduced the bylaw that can punish anyone found urinating in Selby's streets with a fine of up to £500 in March earlier this year.  These offences were contrary to the Byelaws for Good Rule and Government Act 1972 for the prevention and suppression of nuisances.

The six-strong Enforcement Team was formed earlier this year following the restructure of posts within Selby District Council, in order to meet the £3 million of savings required following the reduction in funding from central Government.  The restructure was an opportunity for the Council to re-assess how every part of the organisation worked.  The new central enforcement team supports the overall ambition of officers undertaking a range of duties to make the very best use of the resources the Council has, and to protect front-line services.

Leader of the Council, Mark Crane, said:

"Our message is simple, if you engage in anti-social behaviour then there will be serious consequences.

"Residents have to know that we are working hard to ensure our district is protected from this kind of behaviour.  It is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it.

"These prosecutions demonstrate our commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour and keeping our district clean.  This supports two of the Council's key long-term aims which are to keep communities safe and to protect the local environment."
