Arrest made after hammer attack in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire Police Statement:

An 84-year-old woman was attacked in Leyburn on Monday 28 November 2011.

At around 11am, the victim was attacked in public toilets near the alleyway at the side of the Posthorn Tea and Coffee shop on the market place.

The victim was hit on her head four times before her handbag was taken. The bag was later found in a separate block of public toilets near the cinema with the contents missing. At this stage police believe the suspect got away with a large amount of cash after the victim had withdrawn money from her account.  

The suspect used a hammer and a stick to attack the victim. She was treated by ambulance staff at the scene before being taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital for treatment to head injuries.

Police are appealing for anyone was in Leyburn market place this morning who either witnessed the attack or saw a woman matching the description of the suspect in either of the toilet blocks, or walking between the two, to contact them urgently.

The stick belonged to the victim and has been recovered by police, but the hammer has not yet been found.Police are also appealing to anyone who finds a discarded hammer to contact them immediately.

Detective Inspector Andrea Kell, said:

“This is a horrific attack on an elderly woman in broad daylight and it is vital that we find the person responsible. I am appealing to any members of the public who were in the market place today to contact us if they believe they can assist the investigation, or anyone who knows who carried out this shocking attack, to contact us as a matter of urgency. ”

North Yorkshire Police update:

This is an update in relation to the incident in Leyburn yesterday (28 November 2011) in which an 84-year-old local woman was attacked by a woman with a hammer.

A 47-year-old woman from the Leyburn area was arrested late last night in connection with the incident. She is currently being held in police custody for questioning.

The victim has been released from hospital following treatment for head injuries.
