8 car pile up near Dishforth

Motorists have escaped serious injury after an eight car pile up near Dishforth.

Two women had to be freed from their cars and a number of people were taken to hospital.

None of the injuries are thought to be serious.

The A1 was closed for several hours.

Statement from North Yorkshire Police:

North Yorkshire Police were called at around 6.30pm on Tuesday 25 October 2011 after reports of a road traffic collision on the A1(m) at Dishforth.

The incident, involving eight vehicles, occurred at junction 49 on the southbound carriageway.

All three lanes were blocked and the road was closed until 9.40pm while the vehicles were recovered.

Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured in the collision, however a number of people suffered minor injuries and were taken to Harrogate District Hospital or Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.
