Driver wanted after approaching a 9 year old

Police in York are appealing for information following an incident when a man approached a young girl.

The incident occurred on Grange Lane at approximately 6.35pm on Tuesday 11 October 2011.

A man driving a red car stopped before approaching the girl and engaged her in conversation.

The only description of the man is that he had a scruffy grey beard and the car had blacked out windows.

The 9-year-old girl was unharmed.

DS Mandy Grundy of York CID said:

“At this stage we are still trying to establish what happened and whether the incident is a cause for concern. 

“Therefore it is important that the bearded man in the red car comes forward to the police as a matter of urgency to give his account.

“We are also urging anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information that can help to identify the man to contact the police or Crimestoppers immediately.

“As a precaution and to reassure the community while these enquiries are ongoing, police activity has been increased in the area.”
