2011 Yorkshire in Bloom

4:22pm 20th September 2011

As the city awaits the result of Britain in Bloom the results are in for all those individual York participants in the regional Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

5 Gold, 7 silver gilt, 3 silver, 1 bronze & in neighbourhood category – 1 Outstanding, 3 Thriving, 1 Improving, 4 Developing.

Plus Discretionary Award – Sawley Arms Trophy to Ian Halstead, gardener York Racecourse, individual who has made greatest contribution over forty years for his floral displays and work.

Raising awareness has been the key to the success of York in Bloom within the city and is demonstrated by the way York at large has taken the ethos of ‘In Bloom’ to heart. 2011 saw an unprecedented number of York entries in Yorkshire in Bloom – the most York has ever had with more than half being first time entrants.

The aim of York in Bloom has always been for support for ‘In Bloom’ to spring from grass roots, for our communities to take over and give the competition its own impetus and that’s where we are.

In Bloom has taken off in the City & is not restricted to the city centre. You will find flowers everywhere – from single flower pots to more expansive displays in local retail centres, business parks, shopping areas, public houses, community centres, residential areas, schools, parks & gardens & our residents’ gardens, yards & windowsills with people participating in caring for their local environment demonstrating that they really do Love Where They Live – York.
