Selby police are hunting a woman suspected of stealing an elderly shopper’s purse.

The suspect was captured on CCTV cameras in Yorkshire Trading Company on Gowthorpe, where the theft took place, at around 1.30pm on Friday 26th August 2011.

The victim, a local woman, was shopping in the store when she put her purse down to look at knitting patterns. The suspect picked the purse up and left the store, making no attempt to hand it in to staff.

Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the theft or recognises the offender from the CCTV image, to come forward.

PC Stuart Henderson, of Selby police, said:

“This appears to have been an opportunist theft which was obviously upsetting for the elderly victim.

“The image we have shows a fairly clear picture of the woman we would like to trace and I am appealing for the public to help us identify her.

“I am also appealing for the woman pictured to do the right thing and contact the police so the matter can be brought to a conclusion.”

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact PC Stuart Henderson, of Selby police, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110124235.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
