Missing Latvian man in York area

Gunars Verhopurovs

6:11pm 11th August 2011

North Yorkshire Police are urgently appealing for assistance to trace a Latvian man who has been reported missing from home in York.

Gunars Verhopurovs, 46, Lidgett Grove, is thought to be in the area of Shipton by Benninbrough (possibly along the A19 corridor) where officers believe a local resident or shop owner has allowed him to use the intranet at about 10.40am today, Thursday 11st August, to make contact with his wife at home in Latvia.

Police are concerned for his safety as he suffers from depression and has possibly been sleeping outdoors since he was reported missing by his flatmate at teatime on Tuesday 9th August.

Inspector Allan Wescott of York police said:

“Our enquires and searches remain ongoing to locate Mr Verhopurovs. We are very concerned about his welfare and his wife and daughter in Latvia are worried sick about him.

“I am appealing to local residents in York, and particularly those in the Shipton by Benninbrough area, to contact the police if they have seen a man matching Mr Verhopurovs’ description or if anyone has helped him in any way over the past couple of days.”

He is described as a white, 5ft 8in tall, very slim build, blue eyes, thinning brown hair and he has tattoos on both arms. At the time of going missing he was wearing a red jacket with white trim, brown trousers and brown shoes. He speaks poor English.

If you can assist the missing person inquiry, please contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110133724.
