A64 CRASH UPDATE: G4 Prison Van overturns
7:21pm 6th July 2011
Nine prisoners are being treated on the westbound carriageway of the A64 after a G4 prison van overturned earlier near Tadcaster.
North Yorkshire Police have confirmed it collided with another vehicle, as yet unknown, near Slice Lane just after 5pm.
All the prisoners are accounted for and being heavy guarded by officers along the carriageway (accurate at 7.15pm).
They were being transported from Hull Prison to various locations around the country.
What Minster FM can confirm is that the A64 westbound carriageway has been closed to one lane whilst an investigation is carried out. It is likely to remain that way until 8.15pm. Up to six miles of traffic has built-up as motorists slow down to look at the incident.
Members of the public are being urged not to panic and the situation is under control with all the prisoners accounted for.
Paramedics are now at the scene treating the prisoners and between 2 to 3 prison officers.
North Yorkshire Police have told Minster FM if any of the inmates require hospital treatment they will be taken to York District Hospital and will be accompanied by a prison officer to guard them.
None of the injuries are thought to be life threatening.
