Bird of Prey killed in North Yorkshire

Bird of Prey killed in North Yorkshire

4:15pm 20th October 2009

North Yorkshire Police is investigating a rare bird of prey that's been found dead in Lindley Green near Otley.

The body of a female Red Kite was discovered in woodland by a member of the public.

The bird had suffered wounds caused by two shotgun pellets, however this did not appear to be the cause of death.

Following a post mortem examination which proved to be inconclusive, tissue samples were sent to the Central Science Laboratory for toxicology tests.

The results showed that the bird had been poisoned with Carbofuran and rat poison.

PC Gareth Jones, Wildlife Crime Officer for Harrogate District, said: “This case demonstrates that bird of prey persecution in North Yorkshire is still occurring".

Anyone with any information that can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact PC Gareth Jones on 0845 60 60 24 7.

Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
