Support clubs in the Blue Square Premier
12:01am 1st July 2011
York Central MP Hugh Bayley will today (1st July 2011) meet with York City Football Club Chairman, Jason McGill, to discuss funding for York City’s Youth Programme and the plans for the new stadium.
Mr Bayley has been pressing the government, the Football League, Sports England, the Football Foundation and the Football Association to do more to help clubs in the Blue Square Premier.
Mr Bayley says:
“York City and five other football clubs are treated unfairly because they do not fit the criteria for help. Clubs in the Football League receive £180,000 a year through the Football League Trust. Non professional clubs receive help through the Football Foundation but clubs in the Blue Square premier are classed as professional but not League clubs so they are left out.
“I have raised this issue in Westminster and asked the FA’s Director of Football Development, Sir Trevor Brooking, to meet me to discuss what the FA can do to help support clubs like York City.”
Mr McGill will also discuss the planned new development at Monks Cross, which will see a brand new 6,000 seater community stadium which will provide a new home ground for York City F.C. and the York City Knights Rugby League Club. It is expected that the development will create around 750 new jobs. The plans are expected to be submitted within the next few weeks.
Hugh Bayley MP says:
“York’s football and rugby league clubs promote our city every time they play, and they bring fans from other places to York whenever they play at home. This is an important part of the visitor economy.
“York needs a new community stadium. There is too much uncertainty about it and it was good to meet Jason to hear York City FC’s plans. Both York City FC and the York Knights have players, fans, backroom staff and volunteers who are passionate about their clubs and they deserve and need the best facilities to showcase their teams.”
Jason McGill, York City FC Chairman says:
“York City Football Club appreciates the support our local MP, Hugh Bayley, is giving to the Club in terms of our situation regarding funding for our youth team.
"We very much hope that with his efforts, youth funding will be reinstated for clubs, like ourselves, who have maintained a youth policy despite no longer being part of the Football League.
"We also very much welcome Hugh Bayley’s support for the new community stadium.
"He clearly recognises the advantages a new facility will have for sport in York and the benefits the stadium project will have for the wider community.”
