York police find missing man and prevent a tragedy

A man from York in hospital after a suspected overdose.

The 54 year old, who hasn't been named, also has head and shoulder injuries.

He disappeared on Tuesday afternoon and was said to be in a distressed state.

A total of 21 police officers, including a specialist search team and 14 PCSOs, were involved in the hunt for the missing man.

STATEMENT FROM NORTH YORKSHIRE POLICE:

Police and PCSOs in York have been praised by senior officers following the successful search for a distressed man who went missing in the city.

The 54 year old, local man had been reported missing by his wife at 9.25pm on Tuesday 28th June 2011. She had last seen him at 3.30pm the same day at Clifton Moor Gate. His family and police officers were extremely concerned for his safety as his disappearance was out of character and they had concerns for his state of mind.

A total of 21 police officers, including specialist search officers, and 14 Police Community Support Officers were involved in the search for the missing man which carried on throughout the night and into the next morning. He was located shortly after 11am on Wednesday 29th June 2011 by a police officer in the Clifton area.

The man was immediately taken to York District Hospital where he was treated for a suspected overdose as well as head and shoulder injuries. The 54 year old currently remains in hospital in a stable and satisfactory condition.

Superintendent Lisa Winward, Safer Neighbourhood Commander for the York district, said:

“This is an excellent example of the time and effort taken by police officers and PCSOs to locate a missing man whose life was at risk. I am very proud of the professionalism they displayed.

“The officers’ actions meant that he was located and taken to hospital for treatment, before events led to a tragic end.”
