Knavesmire School headteacher dies
12:13pm 7th June 2011
Micklegate ward councillors, including a school governor at Knavesmire School, have offered their condolences following the death of its Headteacher.
Carol Weston had been the school’s Head for many years, but yesterday lost her battle against cancer.
School governor Coun. Sandy Fraser reacted to the news, saying:
“I was informed by Bill Schofield, our Chair of Governors, of the news this morning which I was extremely sad to hear.
"The governors were aware of Carol’s illness but, with Carol having attended recent meetings, this news came as a shock as we were hoping to see her back at the school in the near future.
"Her excellent contribution over the years has been valued by all involved with the school and the school’s popularity is obvious from the level of oversubscription in recent years”.
Fellow councillors Julie Gunnell and Dave Merrett said they shared Coun. Fraser’s sadness at the news, and have been assured that the necessary support will be given to the school and its pupils by the council’s education department and wider schools community in the weeks and months ahead.
Coun. Merrett added:
“I worked with Carol previously as Shadow Children’s Services spokesperson, and on local planning related issues, and this is a real loss to pupils, parents and the wider community too”.
