9 year old Jessica Tate, from Norton, is through to the grand finale of a UK tournament for the card game 'Top Trumps'.

The youngster is aiming to be top of the class in a UK tournament of the popular schoolyard card game.

More than 100,000 UK pupils competed in the heats and the final sees regional champions from the Isle of Skye to Swansea, Newcastle to Newquay

The makers of cult card classic Top Trumps, which first hit shop shelves in 1977 – say Jessica came in the top 20 out of 100,000 in one elimination stage beating hundreds of opponents up and down the country.

The Grand Finale takes place at London’s Science Museum tonight.

If Jessica wins she will not only lift the winning trophy but also win £1,000 for her school, as well as an all-expenses paid educational school trip for her and her classmates.

“Our congratulations to Jessica,” says Fiona Hortopp, Marketing Manager at the game’s makers Winning Moves UK.

“She has done fantastically well to get to the Grand Final from so many entrants. We wish her all the very best in London.”

The 2011 National Schools Top Trumps Tournament will be played using a ‘Tournament’ version of Top Trumps rather than the traditional format of Top Trumps, which tends to be played more on a ‘one on one’ basis.

The new bumper edition of Top Trumps is a bid by the game’s makers Winning Moves to encourage children to spend more time playing together away from laptop and mobile phone screens to make them more “socially friendly” in these digitally dominated times.

Fiona Hortopp at Top Trumps Winning Moves UK explains:

“We feel Top Trumps Tournament edition addresses this. It’s the ultimate in family friendliness.”

Fiona adds that Top Trumps generally has become a phenomenon, with more children playing together than ever before.

“The traditional Top Trumps is very much a one on one game,” she says.

“Our new Tournament edition is a way of letting a whole family or classmates play together.

“In this digital age it’s great that Top Trumps Tournament allows for interactive family time. It offers the opportunity to get children off the computer screen and provides rare precious quality time with your children.”
