Warning of Council Tax scam
5:48pm 20th May 2011
City of York Council is warning residents that fraudsters claiming to work for a council tax refund company have recently targeted the area in telephone scams.
The valuation company is called CTR (The Council Tax Rebate Team) and have contacted customers offering to check their Council Tax banding to obtain a refund on behalf of the customer.
The company is believed to be trading from Huddersfield and are asking customers for bank details up front so that they can refund straight back into their bank account.
Matt Boxall, manager of Trading Standards at City of York Council, said:
"We are urging residents to be vigilant. Calls asking for personal or bank details are dangerous and should be ignored.
“If anyone receives any calls regarding these issues please ring the police on 0845 6060247, or to report any scam please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 40 05 06.”
