Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a serious assault in Acomb.

It occurred on Friday 29 April, between 11pm and 11.30pm, outside the Ainsty public house, on the junction of Boroughbridge Road and Carr Lane. A 27-year-old local man was assaulted by a group of men as he left the premises.

As a result of the assault the victim was knocked to the ground, when the assault continued.

He managed to stand up and as he tried to escape, was again knocked the ground.

As well as being kicked and punched the victim was also hit on the head with a bottle.

Following the assault the man was taken by ambulance to York District Hospital where he was treated for head injuries.

An 18-year-old local youth has been arrested in connection with the incident.

He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Detective Constable Michael Johnston, of York CID, said:

"This was a vicious assault which could have had a far more serious outcome.

"I understand that there was a large number of people in the public house at the time, celebrating the royal wedding, and I ask that they come forward as I need to speak to them as soon as possible."
