Hugh Bayley MP Launches the York Yes! to Fairer Votes Campaign
York MP will declare support for the Alternative Vote in May's UK referendum when he visits the Yes Campaign's phonebank next Monday.
On the 28th of March Hugh Bayley MP will meet the York campaign for the Alternative Vote system at a breakfast media briefing in the Space 109 centre on Walmgate. He will talk about his passion for electoral reform, and answer questions from the press. Mr Bayley will officially open the campaigning in York, and will meet and congratulate the volunteers who have been working tirelessly for the Alternative Vote.
Hugh Bayley has been a long-time advocate of electoral reform: he joined the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform soon after his election in 1992. Having sat on many select committees, served as a Government Minister and for a short time served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr Bayley knows intricately the ways in which parliament works and how best to improve it. He comments:
"The alternative vote gives the public more control over MPs and parliament and I shall be campaigning for people to vote yes to fairer votes in the referendum on 5 May.
"After the expenses scandal, parliament has to change to win back public trust. Business as usual won't do. Changing the voting system so that MPs only win if they get a majority of the votes is an important step forward because it will make MPs reach out to people in other parties and listen to different points of views"
Peter Roderick, York's campaign coordinator, added:
"We are very pleased to be able to welcome Hugh to this event. This will be a fantastic opportunity for journalists to learn about the referendum and the Yes campaign - in particular the huge amount of work that is going on locally in York to ensure a Yes vote."
