Chemical spill exercise to take place in York
12:25pm 21st March 2011
On the evening of 21st March, fire crews from across the York area will be practising to deal with a chemical type incident at the Portakabin site in York.
A total of four fire engines and a specialist decontamination unit will be used, involving over 30 firefighters in a scenario designed to test local procedures for dealing with a medium scale incident, involving a chemical leak, with reports of workers on site being trapped and injured.
Station Manager Alan Bell from York Fire Station says:
"The exercise is part of our ongoing training programme to ensure firefighters are fully prepared to deal with a range of incidents to keep the public safe.
"The staff and management at Portakabin have provided us with a unique opportunity to train on their site in a controlled environment to test our procedures and the safe use of our equipment"
Station Manager Alan Bell also wanted to reassure the public and local residents in particular that the exercise would be based on a simulation and no chemicals will actually be involved.
