2 charged after Department store burglary in York
11:20am 14th March 2011
Two men have been charged with burglary after breaking into a York department store and stealing thousands of pounds worth of clothing and cosmetics.
Police were called to Fenwick in St Marys Square at around 12.20am on Sunday 13 March 2011 after a member of the public reported seeing three men in balaclavas smash a window and enter the store.
Officers attended the scene and surrounded the building.
As the suspects left the store, two men, one aged 23 and one aged 28, were immediately arrested and another man aged 26, seemingly made an effort to escape police by jumping into the River Foss.
He eventually climbed out of the river behind the court house and was immediately detained.
The men were taken into custody and two (the 23-year-old and the 28-year-old) were subsequently charged. They are due to appear at York Magistrates’ Court this morning (14 March).
The 26-year-old man remains in police custody as enquiries continue.
