Police in Whitby are asking for witnesses following a fire in the town.

It occurred at Whitby Tyres and Exhausts on the Enterprise Way industrial site at 9.30pm on Wednesday 23 February. The fire started in a storage yard holding several hundred tyres which were destroyed in the blaze before spreading to buildings on the site which were severely damaged.

Police and fire officers investigating the cause of the fire are treating it as suspicious.

As a result of the fire the A171 had to be closed and a cordon put in place, affecting the industrial site, as a precaution as there were gas cylinders in the area of the fire. The A171 remained closed until 9.10am on Thursday 24 February and the Enterprise Way industrial site was reopened at 10am the same day.

Inspector Mike Fenton, of Whitby Safer Neighbourhood Team, said:

“We have worked with colleagues from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and believe that this fire was a deliberate act of arson.

“The fire destroyed large number of tyres before spreading to a building on the site which was severely damaged. It also caused severe disruption in the area.

“If anyone was in the area at the time and saw any suspicious or unusual in the area at the time or knows anything about the fire I ask that they contact me as soon as possible.”

If you can assist with this enquiry please contact Inspector Mike Fenton at Whitby Police Station on 0845 60 60 24 7 quoting reference number 12110030440. Or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
