Hundreds evacuated after a suspected arson attack in York

Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in York earlier today after a suspected arson attack on a house caused a gas pipe to catch light.

It happened at an end terrace property on Upper Newborough Street in the Clifton area of the city at 4.25am.

It is believed the blaze was started in a pile of rubbish in an alleyway before it spread to the gas pipe supplying the property.

Detective's are treating the incident as suspicious.

They're now conducting door-to-door inquiries and are also checking CCTV footage.
