Tax Scams in York.
10:54am 19th January 2011
City of York Council is warning residents that fraudsters claiming to work on behalf of the council tax team have recently targeted the area in telephone and doorstep scams.
The council has received several complaints from York residents after they were approached from fraudsters offering to obtain a council tax rebate for them.
Residents were offered help to query current council tax banding so they could obtain a refund, and some residents were told they had been awarded a rebate and were asked for a fee and a percentage of any rebate received.
Judith Fardon, Consumer Advice and Trading Standards team at City of York Council, said:
“It is believed residents were targeted because the fraudsters had some information about them, but some residents were asked to confirm their bank details too. We would always advise any consumer to take extreme caution before giving their bank details to any cold caller.
“If residents want to query their council tax band, they can do at no cost, by contacting their local Valuation Office Agency on 0845 602 1507. Members of the council tax team will be pleased to discuss any questions and explain how the council tax band has been allocated.
“For any enquiries concerning council tax rebates by phone or by a visit, please call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 for advice. Anyone wanting information will be passed to the Trading Standards team where necessary.”
