High speed pursuit on the A1
3:54pm 4th January 2011
There was a high-speed pursuit along the A1 this morning involving police cars and air support.
At around 2.30am officers near Wetherby came across a white van driving erratically.
Suspicions were raised even further when the vehicle failed to stop for police officers and they began a high-speed pursuit involving three police vehicles.
During the pursuit, the rear doors of the van opened and a quad-bike fell from the vehicle missing the pursuing police vehicles.
The van eventually came to a halt near Ferrybridge and two men ran off.
One ran into nearby countryside; the other, who was the driver, jumped into the River Aire.
That man was pulled from the water and arrested on suspicion of theft, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and driving while disqualified.
We're told he's 23 and from Worksop.
The other man remains at large.
In addition to the van, which is suspected as being stolen from the Nottinghamshire area, police also recovered the quad-bike which was believed to have been stolen from Chop Gate near Stokesley, a ride-on lawnmower and an industrial power washer also believed stolen, goods worth around £10,000 in total.
The arrested man is still in police custody.
