Severe weather driving tips from North Yorkshire Fire sevice.

Severe weather driving tips from North Yorkshire Fire sevice.

10:37am 5th November 2010

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have attended several incidents recently where motorists and their vehicles have become trapped in flood water.

With the onset of winter and the likelihood of more bad weather, we would like to issue the following tips to motorists:

"    Make sure you can see the way out before you enter water, and if it is too deep, or too fast moving, don't risk it. If you can't tell how deep the water is, back up and find an alternative route; around two feet of water is all it takes to float many cars.

"    Don't drive down closed roads; they will be closed for a reason.

"    When driving through flood water lower your speed right down and choose the shallowest route available, use the middle of the road if that's where the shallowest part is and you can.

"     Use a low gear to keep revs high and control speed by slipping the clutch (be aware that water could enter the exhaust, so keep the revs up).
"    Park on higher ground if you live in an area under flood warning

"    Listen to weather reports and flood alerts, and try to avoid areas that are liable to flooding.

"    If you do get stuck in floodwater, make sure you are safe, get to the highest point you can and call for help.

"    Remember if you don't know how deep the water is do NOT drive through it.
