York Monopoly board game released
7:25am 29th October 2010
The city Passes Go today- as the brand new MONOPOLY: York Edition is launched and unveiled for the very first time at the JORVIK Viking Centre.
The game, which was determined by the votes of York residents, will hit shop and virtual shelves within minutes of its launch and sees York Minster taking the top 'Mayfair' location, price to buy M400 (that's pounds to you and me).
The JORVIK Viking Centre, which has won the honour of hosting the launch, appears on a red site priced M220.
The customised board will be unveiled by Mark Marriott, Commercial Director of the game's maker Winning Moves UK - along with a representative from The JORVIK Viking Centre and two customised Vikings (a male and a female).
It will be launched at the JORVIK Viking Centre in Coppergate, York, at 8.57am, just minutes before the game goes on shop and virtual shelves for the first time. Media can assemble from 8.45am. Media to ask for David Scott.
"Without the great York public this game could not have been produced so we would like be formally thanking everyone now," says Mark Marriott, Commercial Director of the game's maker Winning Moves UK.
Sarah Maltby, Director of Attractions at York Archaeological Trust, owner of JORVIK Viking Centre says:
"We are delighted to be hosting the official launch of the MONOPOLY York board - and to be on board.
"JORVIK is synonymous with York, representing its past, present and future and we are pleased to be featured prominently with this much loved family game."
Helen Douglas, York Dungeon Manager, says:
"The York Dungeon has specialised in bringing York's horrible history vividly back to life for over 20 years, so we're delighted to be representing the city's dark side in the York edition of MONOPOLY. But players beware; going to jail is no longer the scariest thing in the game!"
Winning Moves UK is the leading London games company with the license from MONOPOLY owners Hasbro to produce this customised game.
It was announced in the spring there would be a game for the city.
The board sees more than 30 famous regional landmarks swapping places with the likes of 'Mayfair' and 'Park Lane.
The public was invited at the time to help shape the board with nominations and suggestions.
The spirit and shape of this customised edition remains the same as with the traditional MONOPOLY board game that was first introduced 75 years ago. In 1935, Parker Brothers began selling the MONOPOLY property trading game, which would quickly become a cultural phenomenon. Seventy-five-years later, more than one billion people in 111 countries have played the game.
The game goes on virtual and shop shelves at 9am on Friday (29th October 2010) including at: amazon.co.uk, Asda, cultandcool.com, Debenhams, HMV, PLAY.com, Shop Direct, Tesco, The Works, The York Dungeon, Toys R Us, Waterstones, WH Smith and other leading stores. And it is proving very popular so far - before even a copy has been sold - with advance orders.
David Sommer, Sales Director of Winning Moves UK, says:
"This game has surpassed every expectation we have had - even before the first copy has been sold."
