6:51am 26th October 2010

Funding for adoption and fostering services in York will NOT be cut.

That's from the council following last week's spending review.

Official have told Minster FM "we're talking about children's lives and happiness here and we can't be making any economies on that."

York's Children's services attact international attention with success:

Childcare experts from Sweden are to visit York next week to discuss children’s services and see how City of York Council’s Children’s Services have achieved their ranking as one of the top ten services in the country.

Charlotte Kvarnström, Magnus Domberg and Patrik Johansson are all managers of family centres in Västerås, Sweden, and will visit York to find out more about the Council’s experience of running children’s centres and integrated and multi-agency services for children.

The visit follows work that took place last year which saw City of York Council staff finding out more about how the services were run in Sweden.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Carol Runciman will meet the Swedish visitors to discuss her experiences as the city’s Executive Member for Children and Young People’s Services.

Councillor Runciman said she was delighted that York’s Children’s Services were seen internationally as examples of good practice.

She said, “It is testament to the hard work and dedication of the Council’s staff that not only have they been ranked as one of the best Children’s Services in the country, but that they are also attracting international attention with their excellent work.”

“I know that our staff who worked with their Swedish counterparts last year learnt a lot from their experience and picked up some good practices that they could use here in York. I hope that this visit proves as useful for our Swedish visitors.”

“Integrated Children’s Centres have been a great success story in York, they have brought together a wide range of agencies working with children and families to provide a joined up service that really benefits children and their families.”

“Our staff are always keen to improve the service and help others to improve as well so I am sure that this visit will be a great success.”
