Administrators to rail maintenance firm Jarvis have announced 1100 redundancies.
Deloitte says the absence of further funding means the company can't carry on trading.
The jobs will be lost at Jarvis' head office in York and in Doncaster, Glasgow, Leeds, Newcastle and Peterborough.
Meanwhile a legal challenge, aimed at halting crippling train strikes for four days starting the day after Easter Monday, has been postponed.
York based Network Rail is seeking an injunction to prevent walkouts by signal workers belonging to the RMT union.
The High Court case is now expected to conclude tomorrow (Thursday 1st April 2010).
