Seven roundabouts on York's Outer Ring Road will be improved as a West Yorkshire transport body approves £37 million to pay for it.
The project is set speed up the journey around the northern Ring Road by around a fifth by 2021, but officials say the benefits will be greater at roundabouts like Haxby.
The Wetherby, Great North Way, Clifton Moor, Wigginton Rd, Haxby, Strensall, Monks Cross roundabouts will all benefit from the plans.
The city centre is also set to benefit as traffic which currently avoids using the Ring Road goes back on to the A1237.
The roundabout improvement work is set to be completed by 2021.
Other projects have been announced for York as part of the £1.4 billion package across West Yorkshire and York, these include:
- Improvements for traffic to get around York Station and to gain access to the York Central development site
- A new bus interchange at York Station
- A new Park and Ride at Clifton Moor
Dafydd Williams, leader of City of York Council, said:
“This decision represents a significant move forward in the economic ambition for this city. It’s the next key step in securing and progressing funds to upgrade York’s Outer Ring Road. We’ve been working cross party with political colleagues in the region and nationally, and this demonstrates a clear benefit of being in the combined authority and the benefits of working together across council borders to progress schemes.
“As part of the WYCA we aim to invest in and address long overdue transport needs, including better bus interchange at the Railway Station and the provision of access to the York Central development site. This is crucial to the city’s sustained growth and economic prosperity and allows us to strengthen the links between our key supply chains and shared markets, and enable vital improvements in the city’s transport and economic infrastructure.”
