York's new Labour leader Dafydd Williams has called for an automatic refund of Lendal Bridge fines and for a council tax freeze in next year's budget.
He has told Minster FM he will ask York Council officials to send out refunds to all drivers from Monday. He denied Labour had been forced into it by the opposition, who were likely to pass an automatic refund at a meeting on 11th December, instead he says he has been "listening to residents".
We don't know when the money will hit people's bank accounts, but Dafydd Williams says it will be done as a matter of urgency. Previously, the party had said there would be a cost to council taxpayers from a refund, in the administration of sending out letters. Dafydd Williams says he will be working with officials to minimise that cost.
He's also promising to work with all parties for the benefit of York and says he is opposed to "personalised politics".
His top three priorities are:
- Change the political culture
- Refund all Lendal Bridge fines
- Freeze council tax in next year's budget
