York Racecourse Wins National Award
1:08pm 14th November 2014
The track picked up the first prize in the “top spot” section where the judges were impressed by York’s flower bed topped rubbish bins, which helped to add a touch of colour to an important if sometimes overlooked piece of the racecourse operation.
The Awards are open to all Britain’s racecourses and this year York was also pleased to have made the final shortlist in a further two categories; nominated in the Corporate and Social Responsibility section for the team’s efforts in hosting the Start of Day 2 of the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. As well as a further nomination for the “Owners’ Experience” where the investment in making a day at York Races a truly special experience for Owners, as well as for racegoers, was acknowledged.
This is the fifth year in a row that York has collected one of these Awards, having won on previous occasions for supporting the next generation of riders through the Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals and in 2012 for unlocking the marketing potential of Frankel, the superstar racehorse who won the richest race at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival that year.
Collecting the award, Head of Marketing and Sponsorship, James Brennan, said:
“The floral bins were made by the in house team and the flowers grown in our own nursery so it is very much an award for a whole team effort. Of course, July 6th was a special morning, hosting 198 world class cyclists, the eighty vehicles in the publicity caravan, the fly-past of the RAF Memorial flight and 30,000 of our friends and neighbours. Reflecting on the awards ceremony brings back to mind that fun filled atmosphere and how fabulous it was to see everyone enjoying the racecourse. We hope we never forget that Owners play a vital role in the sport so we are always looking to enhance their experience, whether through record prize money of over £6 million or by investment in physical improvements such as the Northern End Development. I’m delighted that the efforts of Team York have been recognised at the end of another successful season.”
