VIDEO: Lib Dem Landslide & Labour "Thumping" in Westfield By-Election

The Liberal Democrats have won a landslide in the York Council by-election in Westfield ward. It means former city council leader Andrew Waller returns to the authority.

Keith Aspden, Leader of York's Liberal Democrat Group, said:

“I am delighted with tonight’s result and would like to congratulate Andrew Waller on his outstanding victory while paying tribute to candidates of all parties for a spirited campaign."

"Tonight voters have sent a clear message that they feel letdown by Labour and see the Liberal Democrats as the clear alternative in York."

"I have spoken to so many people who feel disillusioned with the way Labour are running York Council - particularly the cuts to basic local frontline services and the plans to bulldoze over the Green Belt."

You can watch the declaration by returning officer Kersten England and the victory speech by Andrew Waller below:

Labour York Council leader James Alexander started the evening saying the result was "too close to call".But despite a strong campaign, with activists from London, Leeds and Scarborough campaigning, the party's candidate Louise Corson got less than a third of the vote of her Lib Dem rival. It was a result Labour councillor Neil Barnes described as a "thumping" on Twitter.

UKIP candidate Judith Morris, who came in third place, told Minster FM Westfield had been like a "Labour locust farm" with the amount of activists in the ward. But James Alexander said the Lib Dem victory was down to the name recognition of Andrew Waller and not the high numbers of activists.

The election was called after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Lynn Jeffries, who was elected as a Labour representative in 2011.
