Samaritans Urge Commuters In York To 'Talk To Us'

6:30am 24th July 2014

Volunteers from the charity’s York branch will be talking to commuters on July 24 – the 24th day of the seventh month of the year – reminding them that the Samaritans service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week every day of the year.

Samaritans answers calls from people of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances. It provides a safe place for anyone struggling to cope, whoever they are, however they feel.

Volunteers will be manning an information stall at the station from 7am. They will also be joined by members of the British Transport Police who will be handing out leaflets and talking to people to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

Lynette Banks, director at York Samaritans, said:

“We’re delighted to be working in conjunction with British Transport Police to raise awareness of Samaritans at York Railway Station on Thursday July 24."

“Working together we are able to get across the message that Samaritans truly are there for everyone, at any time; we are available 24/7 for people who feel they need to talk to us, in confidence.”

Bob Howe, regional marketing officer for Samaritans in Yorkshire & Humberside, said:

“Raising awareness of our service, during the morning rush hour, to so many rail commuters is really important. We want people to recognise the value of talking, rather than bottling things up."

“People can get in touch with Samaritans’ service by phone, email and text, as well as visiting a branch to speak to a volunteer face to face. We are here round the clock, every single day of the year.”
