Success For York’s Second Apprenticeship Recruitment Event
6:37am 4th July 2014
The event, which took place on Tuesday 1 July at the Hilton Hotel attracted young people and their parents who were interested in finding out about the 250 vacancies on offer with employers across the city. The event looked to inform on the Apprenticeship pathway as well as alternative routes through Level 3 qualifications and university.
Over 30 exhibitors, including employers, training providers and support services, were on hand to discuss job opportunities and career development with young people from York and the surrounding area. Employers included Nestle, NHS, City of York Council, Melton’s, McDonalds, International Service, Purenet and many others covering vacancies across business and finance, hospitality, construction, digital media, engineering, health care and marketing.
The event followed the successful York Apprenticeship Challenge which saw 104 businesses pledge to create 162 new Apprenticeship opportunities. A selection of those who pledged as part of the campaign were there to talk about their new vacancies.
Councillor Janet Looker, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People said:
“It was great to see so many people attend such an informative event. It is fantastic that we can support opportunities for young people, as well as helping businesses grow and keep young talent within the city. Businesses are really waking up to Apprenticeships and the amount of talented young people who are on their doorstep.”
Following two successful pilot events, it is hoped the Apprenticeship Recruitment Events will now take place annually, helping to inform young people of the career opportunities that are available to them locally, switch on employers to Apprenticeships and open up exciting new vacancies for young people in the city.
